The cigars were previously branded as Metapa, Ruben Dario's hometown, although it has since been renamed Ciudad Dario, which is Spanish for City of Dario. Ruben Dario is considered the founder of modernism, a Spanish literary movement focused on poetry that also included Cuban poet José Martí. Since 2024, the Metapa line has received a new name and is now called Aksum. Aksum—the city and kingdom—is located in East Africa, in modern-day Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Aksum by Menelik the First, the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. The packaging gets an update as well, as the image on the box and band of Aksum is that of Haile Selassie’s father, Ras Makonnen, who lived from 1852-1906. The Aksum and Metapa cigar brands is owned by Foundation Cigar Co.
